NECK PAIN: SYMPTOMS, CAUSES, AND HOW TO FIND RELIEF

Many people experience neck pain and stiffness. In some cases, it’s from muscle and joint problems. Sometimes, it’s caused by poor posture, whiplash, or more serious health problems such as meningitis.

It is important to understand the causes of neck pain so that you can identify the appropriate form of relief.

Neck pain symptoms

Neck pain is referred to as “stiffness” because of the limitations it imposes on the movement of the neck. The problem sometimes extends to one shoulder (but rarely to both).

The pain can range from mild to severe. It can manifest itself acutely (suddenly) or chronically (long term). When you have neck pain, you may experience any of the following symptoms:

  • Neck stiffness
  • Limited neck movement, sometimes to one side more than the other
  • Pain in the upper neck, upper back, shoulders, and arms
  • Dizziness
  • Headaches
  • When a nerve root is compressed or inflamed you may have numbness, tingling, or weakness in an arm or hand.

Causes of neck pain

Neck pain and stiffness can happen due to a number of reasons. The most common is muscle problems. Most of us have experienced this. It causes painful tension in the neck or shoulders – sometimes described as a “knotty” feeling.

Poor posture can also cause neck stiffness. For example, spending several hours in front of the screen of your computer could cause painful tension. A backpack or handbag that is too heavy or always holding a baby on the same side can also result in neck stiffness.

Another common reason for neck pain is Fibromyalgia. The condition affects many parts of the body, including the cervical region. It is manifested by chronic and diffuse pain (sometimes at the level of the blow),  extreme fatigue, mental confusion, headaches, anxiety, or even depressive symptoms.

Other causes of neck stiffness are:

  • Poor posture at night, or an uncomfortable bed
  • Stress, worry, or anxiety
  • Driving for an unusually long period
  • Long hours spent at the computer

Psoas massage for Neck pain relief

Neck stiffness is almost always an acute problem. The pain comes on suddenly (usually upon waking) and tends to subside on its own within a week. If you suffer from chronic neck pain, schedule a psoas massage session.

The psoas is the deepest muscle in the body. It affects our strength, flexibility, integrity, strength, and joint mobility. It is also known as the muscle of the soul because it holds onto traumatic experiences on a cellular level. If the psoas is weak, it could cause neck pain and various other issues.
